Dear Parishioners,

This past week I went to Rome with 47 children from St. Joachim’s, St. Edward’s and St. Michael’s Primary Schools with the Head Teachers and 6 other members of Staff. It was a very successful time; as we arrived in Rome we went straight to the Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls, one of the four main Basilicas in Rome. Then we travelled to the Hotel to unpack and get ready to go to the Restaurant for our evening meal. The next morning we had breakfast at 6.30am as we had to be in St. Peter’s Basilica for Holy Mass at the Tomb of Pope St. John Paul II. We prayed for all the Parishes’ Intentions and then visited the rest of the Basilica going almost right up to the top of the roof, first going on the lift for three floors and then climbing steep steps 320 of them, but well worth the effort. The sun was very warm and we saw the wonderful views of Rome. We also visited the St. John Lateran Basilica which is the Pope’s Cathedral of Rome as Bishop. Wednesday we went to the Audience of Pope Francis and were given places to sit quite near the front of the square so we were able to see Pope Francis very closely. We even got a mention (all three schools) at the audience, by the Pope’s Secretary, we had to leave the Hotel the Hotel at 7.30am and we stayed in the Square until 12.30pm. In the afternoon we visited the English College which is the Seminary in Rome for men from England and Wales to study for the Priesthood. A very historic place where many of the Priests in the Middles Ages who studied at the College, were Martyred, when they returned to England. We were shown around by two of the Seminarians and give a very good talk on the History of the College. Thursday we had a day in Pompeii and Friday we visited the Colosseum. It was a great week with lots and lots of walking and of course good fun.
